I can’t remember how old I was when I first saw The Warriors. The film came out in 1979, but I probably first saw it in 1981, or 1982 on a Sunday afternoon tv theater program.
I grew up in a rural area, so the movie captivated me and formed my opinion of what inner city life must be like. Seemed pretty exciting.
Except for maybe The Furies, they were pretty creepy and I probably wouldn’t want to hang out around them.
The movie seemed to be a cult status film, as I don’t remember a lot of kids at school talking much about it except for those of us who were into obscure movies.
I can remember thinking it had hit a new level of popularity when Twisted Sister named their album Come Out And Play. Of course Twisted Sister had fell off the mainstream radar by that time.
For years if you wanted to watch The Warriors you had to catch it at odd hours, or on an obscure UHF station. Then about 2005 a video game about The Warriors by Rockstar Games was made and the film seemed to find a new life and gained some mainstream popularity. Now it seems like it is always available somewhere on TV or streaming. Which is cool, I can watch it 2 or 3 times a year and not get tired of it.
